WDTDAC started in 2007 registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 as a grassroots organization of tribal communities of Wayanad and Nilgiris. The main objective of the WDTDAC is to act as a catalyst in policy formulation related to tribal communities. The WDTDAC has the working jurisdiction of Wayanad and tribal regions of Nilgiris, Calicut, Kannur, Malappuram and Coorg district of Karnataka. Unlike other Adivasi consortiums, WDTDAC has the representation of majority of the tribal communities of these regions with diverse socio economic status.

The genesis of WDTDAC initiated by Community Agrobiodiversity Center of M S Swaminathan Research Foundation and WDTDAC assigned MSSRF as their advisory council. So far, WDTDAC has undertaken different initiatives both independently and in association with MSSRF. Vocational training to Adivasi youth funded by CSR fund of SBI insurance is notable among WDTDAC and MSSRF collaborative initiatives.

In 2010-11 WDTDAC received the prestigious Plant Genomic Saviour Community (PGSC) award for their tireless efforts to conserve the traditional rice varieties of Wayanad. Later from the interest amount of the award money, WDTDAC constituted regional Adivasi genome saviours award with the support and collaboration of scientific institutes like Community Agrobiodiversity Center of M S Swaminathan Research Foundation. Till 2022, WDTDAC awarded 15 tribal on farm conservators and thereby assured the conservation of different plant and animal genetic resources related to agriculture.
