Interventions and Results

  1. Conservation of traditional crop varieties particularly traditional rice varieties. WDTDAC played a key role in ensuring access and availability of quality seeds of traditional varieties to farmers.
  2. WDTDAC constituted regional regional genome saviours award by utilizing interest amount accrued from PGSC award. Every year 3 awards worth Rs. 50000/ (25000,15000,10000) are given to tribal conservators of crop varieties. So far the award has been conferred to 15 tribal families belonging to 3 tribal communities of Wayanad and Nilgiri region.
  3. In order to generate awareness on conservation of crop diversity; WDTDAC in collaboration with Community Agrobiodiversity Center of M S Swaminathan Research Foundation has conducted 6 district level seed festivals along with 18 regional awareness programmes on conservation on agrobiodiversity.
  4. This forum helped to facilitate the exchange of seeds of the following crops

  • WDTDAC constituted the Regional Genome Saviour Award by utilizing the interest amount accrued from Plant Genome Saviour Community (PGSC) award worth 10 lakh received in the year 2012 on behalf of Kurichya and Kuruma farmers. This is the first Award in the state for recognizing agro-biodiversity conservation by indigenous farmers.
